Hair O’ The Dog 2012

posted by amber

posted by Amber-Joi // 2.2.12

On January 14th, 2012 over 1000 people gathered for the 18th Annual Hair O’ The Dog Black Tie Party at the Hotel Westin Philadelphia and I was lucky to be among the party goers.

What the heck is Hair O’ The Dog? Well, the expression, “Hair of the dog” refers to an old school method of curing a hangover. Basically, the concept is that you have a drink “the morning after” and it slows down the body’s natural “withdraw” process; thus, lessening the effect of a hangover. Baby steps instead of cliff jumping. The founders (Daniel Cronin and Rob Molinaro) of HOD chose the name because of the party’s proximity to New Year’s Eve. Apparently this is how Philly collectively solves its NYE hangover. How’s that for brotherly love!?

Despite the fact that Hair O’ The Dog has a longstanding reputation for being Philly’s swankiest party this was my first time attending. Where have I been for the best 17 years? Clearly in the wrong place, because this party was by far one of the best I have attended in the city of Philadelphia. The atmosphere was classy and sophisticated but fun. It’s rare that you find an event of this caliber that isn’t stuffy. Or a party that fun and wild that isn’t also a little scary. But the lovely staff of Hair O’ The Dog pulled it all off with the perfect mix of excitement.

There was something for everyone. Aside from the standard appetizers and drinks there were specialty cocktails and fancy hors devours, a photo booth with festive props for camera whores like me and Kate and even a bottle service lounge presented Cheerleaders that featured the sexy DJ Licious.

Everyone was dressed to the nines and the Philly fashionistas were out in full effect rocking both designer and custom outfits from Herve Leger, BCBG and even Philly’s own Nicole Miller and Aci Nae just to name a few.

There were multiple rooms with different entertainment which included live music by Drop Dead Sexy combined with The Legendary DJ Johnny Looch, a dance floor rocked by the sounds of DJ BEAT STREET and the DYNAMIC DUO of Adrian Hardy and Manny Roman, and even live pop art by painters Glenn Stevens and Perry Milo. But I honestly had a lot of fun in the hallways too, there was so much going on that no area was boring, not even the bathroom (but I’ll keep those details to myself ;-) ).

Just as important as the fantastic atmosphere were all the fabulous people in attendance. Kate and I had the pleasure of snapping some photos with some of our favorite Philly movers and shakers. Here are a few highlights.

Ken Davies, owner of City Fitness in Northern Liberties where me and Kate have been getting our “FIT” on recently. (F.I.T. stands for functional interval training and WE Fit is City Fitness’s one of a kind group training classes. City Fitness just opened up a new location in the Graduate Hospital area.

Susie Celek and Julie Dorenbos of Skin Palette who sprayed tanned Kate and probably hundreds of the attendees before the event. Kate promised Julie that she would wear anything BUT white….Opps! In the end the dress surived and wouldn’t have looked even half as good without that perfect spray tan!

Ed Knight Culinary Deliveries in West Chester (my FAVORITE pizza place and my FAVORITE chef).

Brian Nagele who owns and operates Kings Oak Lane restaurant and just recently bought Arrow Swim Club which will now operate under the name of North Shore Beach Club and will be making all sorts of fun changes. Starting with slashing the original $1000.00 membership to $500, but only for a limited amount of people, so get your application for membership in soon!

Kate with teacher and model Tara Marie and Lauren Harris, Preston and Steve calendar cover girl.

Tom Domalski, owner of Whisper nightclub along with bottle servers Jess and Sam. And, Matt Nadu of the CW crew.

Whisper Club and G Lounge were the hosts of the official after parties which rocked on until 3 and 6 am respectively. I decided to go to Whisper but the party once well under way when I arrived and it was a great time as usual. Kate made it to g and had this to say about her first HOD experience …

“Hair of the Dog was such a nice change of pace from my normal “nightlife” routine. It was great to see a lot of people I don’t see out regularly and the attendance was large enough that I met lots of new friends as well! It was the perfect chance to stretch those social “butterfly” wings from their current winter hibernation. And despite the self-induced stress of waiting till the last minute to find something suitable to wear, I still always love an excuse to dress up.”

We’ve told you before that Cool Kids parties are the place you want to be! And, that’s just where I was when I met “White Mike” MCing. He rocked it!  I would soon find out that not only is White Mike a popular and talented MC, but he is also an entertaining tweeter (@WhiteMikeOZ), and most importantly, a skilled rapper. On November 24th White Mike O.Z. released his fifth mixtape “I Hate Rappers”. The mixtape can be downloaded at www.whitemikemusic.com … FOR FREE!

Got questions!? I did too. So White Mike O.Z. and I had a little impromptu interview. This is what Philly should know about one of its up and coming rappers / entertainers extraordinaire…

Q: What’s the inspiration behind the title of your mixtape “I HATE RAPPERS”?

A: “There is a lot of ‘fronting and following’ with rappers lately. Everybody is trying to be a gangsta’ nowadays. Basically, the title is just how I feel and I think a lot of people agree with the statement.”

In other words White Mike O.Z. “keeps it real” with you.  He’s going to hit you with the truth. His truth! Mike doesn’t need to put up a facade to sell records. He is doing this for the love of the music. He stays true to who he is and you can hear it in his music.

Q: What does the OZ in White Mike O.Z. stand for?

A: “My last name is Osborne, so people have been calling me Oz, Ozzie and O.Z. for years.”

Enough Said!!!

Q: How long have you been rapping? What made you start rapping?

A: “I have loved rap music since I was a little kid. I started rapping about 11 yrs ago.”

White Mike first fell in love with Hip Hop at the age of 9 yrs old. It was introduced to him by an older friend. His love for the music and the culture grew over the years. By the time he hit high school, he was writing rhymes and freestyling in the school cafeteria and at local parties. He has grown to become a popular and respected rapper in the Philly music scene.

Q: What is your favorite song on the mixtape and why?

A: “I would have to say, ‘One Step Away”’… It’s just a real song. I know people will relate to. It’s also how I feel right now. Shout out to Drumcrazie for a crazy beat! Dope producer!”

My personal favorite is “Put it On Repeat” with Marsha Ambrosius. But as a lady I may be biased, because it’s a love song. =) There is something for everyone on “I Hate Rappers”. White Mike is a versatile rapper and this mixtape really shows the many sides of Mike.

Q: What is your relationship with DJ Aktive and DJ A-Run? Why did you choose to collaborate with them?

A: “Aktive & A-Run are like my brothers! We rock parties together and they were the first DJs in the city to really show me love when it came to my music. So, it was only right we do the mixtape together. That’s my family!”

White Mike often works with DJ Aktive and DJ A-Run to DJ and host Philly’s hottest parties. DJ A-Run has worked with Skillz, Macy’s, Royal Caribbean and Rocawear to name a few. And DJ Aktive has toured with major artists like, Kanye West, Kelis, Marshia Ambrosius, and Tyga. Because of the great reputation they are even asked to travel to surrounding cities. They have teamed up to become one of Philly’s hottest crews.

Q: Who is your favorite rapper of all time?

A: “Myself! Lol! Sike! Nah…I’d probably have to say Biggie…his versatility was crazy!”

There he goes!!! Keepin’ it real!

Q: Where can people pick up / download your mixtape and how much does it cost?

A: “The mixtape is on my website www.whitemikemusic.com. It’s available as a free download.”

Go there today folks!! Support Philly rappers! White Mike O.Z. has worked with Philly’s top rappers and DJs. His music has even received radio play. Google him!!!

Q: You’ve coined the phrase “Hustle Smarter” What do you mean by that? How does one Hustle Smarter? Enlighten us!

A: “ … Basically whatever you do, be smart about it. Do your research, have a game plan. You can work hard as hell but if you’re not smart about it you’re wasting time and probably won’t get very far. Hustle Smarter not harder, that’s the way I play!”

And we appreciate the hustle Mike!

Follow White Mike at www.twitter.com/whitemikeoz He’s tweets are awesome and you can also get updates on his music. You can also witness White Mike O.Z. MCing, with his partner in crime DJ Aktive, every Wednesday night at  Vango Lounge.

Download “I Hate Rappers” at www.whitemikemusic.com. I promise you will be entertained.

Just a note:  White Mike’s tweets and music are not for the sensitive and parental discretion is advised.

There is less than one week until the biggest party of the year in Old City. This will be an event you don’t want to miss. The line at Mad River has been over a block long regularly and it’s only going to get crazier next Thursday. Be at 2nd and Chestnut on October 14th, 2010 for a party sure to light up the night. Whether you are a college student, young professional or executive in the Philadelphia area, you won’t want to miss this. For NO line and NO cover before 11PM, email justin@phillyin.com.

This year the party features Split Decision on stage, $1 Coors Light drafts and $1 well drinks from 8-10PM. Be sure to get there early to avoid lines, and come party with PhillyIn.

After the party, send us your party photos, and well put them up on PhillyIn.com.

September 16-18th was a huge weekend for Recess; Philly’s favorite late-night destination. My fav playground was packed! Two anniversary parties, and a “super-sized” Birthday celebration, packaged-up all “pretty-like” into four days of spectacular fun.

It all started on Thursday night with the invite-only Anniversary event. (Think, “back to school” party for the “socially gifted” in Philly.)

It would be easier to tell you who wasn’t there, than to mention names.  (Now that’s a party!)  I was particularly happy to reconnect with friends I hadn’t seen all summer. (Ironic, but true — vacations, and junkets to the shore, can be disruptive to your social life.)

Friday, Recess was open as usual, but it was followed by the massive Anniversary party for the public on Saturday.

Then, as if its own birthday wasn’t “party enough”, Recess opened its doors for “Cool Kid” Jackiem “Jacky” Wright’s huge birthday bash on Sunday.

Three parties not enough for you?

Then, here’s the cherry on the top of our hot-fudge Sunday —  PhillyIn’s very-own’s Amber-Joi had the great, good-common-sense to be born on that very day.  So, Recess was rockin’ — “Like a G6″.

Birthday Boy and Girl

Do I really need to say anything else? For those of you who know how the Cool Kids throw down, you are already marking your calendars. For those of you who don’t know, you have been missing out on some of the hottest most exclusive parties in Philadelphia. Now is your chance to experience an event you will not want to miss.

Jeremy Maclin's Birthday PartyWe all know Jeremy Maclin is a Star Wide Receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles (first round NFL draft pick, two time All-American, Pepsi NFL Rookie of the week, broke several records his rookie year, etc.). Besides Jeremy being an all around phenomenal football player, I have heard (first hand from friends) he is a really cool down to earth guy.

If that wasn’t enough, the DJ for the evening will be West Philadelphia Native DJ Aktive a “DJ that is known for packing a dance floor”. Let’s check his resume: “DJ Aktive has worked with some of the top names in the business, such as Kanye West, The Roots, Organized Confusion, NAS, Floetry, Gang Starr, the Beat Nuts, and Mobb Deep to name a few.”

This event has all the elements to be an epic party. PhillyIn cast members will be there, along with several of Philadelphia’s finest. My advice: Get there as early as possible, so you don’t have to wait outside Sumo Lounge while one of the hottest parties of the year is going on inside. Get In! or Yougetcho!

(Note: Sumo lounge is located in the back of Raw Sushi Bar located on 1225 Sansom St, please use the Chestnut St entrance)

Hey guys! I just got home from Vegas!!! That’s right, I decided to take a much need break from the City of Brotherly Love. Funny thing is, when I got out there I couldn’t seem to avoid people from Philly. They were everywhere!

First things first, when I arrived to the Philadelphia International Airport (yes, everyone’s favorite airport … ahhhh not!)  the security line was about 30 minutes long. >-/  SO I started doing  what I normally do to kill time. Tweeting! “Hey guys! I’m going to Vegas. Anyone want to join me!?!” I didn’t REALLY expect a response, but to my surprise I got a reply from my good ol’ friend Daina. “AJ! I’m off til Monday. I’ll meet you tomorrow” … Holla!!! Daina and I have been friends since about fourth grade. We went to Springside School together, she’s like a sister to me. She arrived the next day as she tweeted she would, and was my partner in crime for the remainder of my stay. And BAM … that was my first dose of PhillyIn Vegas.

So what’s a Philly girl to do on a Thursday night in Vegas!?! I certainly had no idea, so I reached out to a friend who is a VIP host on the nightlife scene. He would definitely know! His response – “u meet @ tryst”! Well ok then!  Daina, Broderick (my other Partner in Crime in Vegas) and I headed to Tryst.  We arrived, skipped the line, skipped the cover and skipped the bar. (our first drinks were on Bob! Thanks!!!) See! You probably thought that A-List celebrities were the only ones to get  theVIP treatment. But that’s not true… it’s all about who you know!  … Wondering how on earth does PhillyIn’s Amber-Joi know a random VIP host in Vegas? Well he’s from Philly of course!! BOOM… my second dose of PhillyIn Vegas.

I walked about 6 steps (seriously 6 steps to the next table) and I see someone that I recognize. “Hey I know you! Aren’t you so and so’s  agent from Philly?” Now, I didn’t know this guys name, but I did know that I had seen him before at various Philly hotspots with an assortment of Philly athletes. Being the friendly girl that I am, I decided to say hi! And I’m so thankful that I did. This gentleman invited me and my friends over to his table, introduced us to his friends and hung out with us for a good portion of the night. POW … my third dose of PhillyIn Vegas.

And this was only my first night. Philly was all over Vegas! I would tell you more about my trip, but frankly I think I have said too much already. We all know that “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!!!”. So I’ll leave it at that. Until next time…

If you have a Vegas trip coming up I suggest you try these nightlife hot spots….

Ballin’ on a Budget

posted by justin

posted by Justin // 4.6.10

Lately, Chris and I have been pouring all of our funds into PhillyIn, and well let’s say, have been quite “financially irresponsible” on our adventures out around Philadelphia. In college, you could take $20 out and live like a king; give a girl a 40 and call her pretty and she’s yours for the evening. Now that we have moved on and our tastes have matured, it is not hard to find yourself spending between $150-200 for a night in Philadelphia, so Chris and I put our heads together to come up with a game plan to invest more money into the business and not into our livers.  The outcome is our new “Ballin’ on a Budget” financial investing plan.

To test out our new financial en devour, we planned a night out with a few beautiful young ladies (to really put our willpower to the test).  The night would begin with dinner, a sporting event, and finally, a night downtown.  The challenge was only spending $80 for the entire evening, and if you ran out of cash, you had to basically survive by any means necessary.  The wallet was to be left at home, credit cards and all; only our ID’s and $80 cash in hand.

We put our heads together, I made a few phone calls to pull some strings, and this is how it all went down…

The evening was to start with dinner followed by a sporting event of some kind. So what did we do? We combined dinner and the game.  I called my friend Brett who plays for the Philadelphia Wings, scored some sweet box seats in the player’s section, all comped.  Objective one was complete.

The evening was starting off great until road-block number one arose, parking; one of the many unforeseen expenses of a night out.  But luckily, being the budget ballers that we are, we had an “in” with a Wachovia Center parking pass and we proceeded with 15 extra dollars in our pockets.  Heading into the game, the girls picked up food, however Chris and I planned ahead and ate and drank BEFORE the night began to keep down the food and beverage expenditures down. After asking the bartender what the cheapest beer they served was (which apparently they do not find too amusing), we grabbed our Yuengling Lagers and proceeded to our seats. The night was going great, already two hours in and only $10 spent each.  Sidenote: This was my first lacrosse game, and let me just say, if you’ve never been to one, you must go.  It is like a UFC fight with goals.  #Awesome.

After the game was over, we headed over to Club Duber for some great hospitality and comped drinks before continuing on.  As always Club Duber was poppin’, crazy packed, and the DJ was spinning the best mash-up I’ve heard in a while.  Around 11, we left and made our way to Public House.  Earlier in the week I talked to a friend who works at Public, and she so graciously comped our first 2 bottles for myself, the girls and the Wings players we were with.  Things started getting crazy at this point, so we ordered another bottle.  Public House was absolutely ridiculous. It is by far my favorite bar in the city; always has the best crowd, great music and you never know what local celebrities are swinging through (On this particular night I met Jeff Carter).  The serving staff and managers are some of the friendliest and most hospitable in the city.

Around 1:30 we paid our tab, which was about $55 each and headed home.  The plan was to head over to Recess, but only having $10 left each, and Katy B (and her previously injured ankle) heading home, we would not have had enough money to cover the cab fare.  So what did we do with our leftover money? Headed straight back to our second favorite late night spot, Club Duber, drank a couple more mixed drinks on the house, finally ending up at our third favorite after hours spot, McDonald’s for some dollar menu action. Boom! Dinner! So now a show, a night on the town, and finally dinner were accomplished.

In conclusion, $76 each were spent for the entire evening, which consisted of dinner, a game, AND bottle service at one of the best bars in the city, all while still saving enough cash to hit two after hours spots.  True ballin’ on a budget.

As Chris and I explore our new financial en devour, we will learn as we go, and bring you little tips and tricks you can use to save money on your nights out.

Rules of the “Balling on a Budget” financial plan we learned on this night are the following:

Rule #1 – The most important rule of the “Balling on a Budget” financial plan, NEVER tell anyone, especially a beautiful lady you are trying to impress, that you are on the financial plan! You will not impress her.

Rule #2 – Never leave another Budget Baller behind.

Rule #3 – Never ask a bartender what the cheapest drink they serve is.

Rule #4A – Get to know some professional athletes.

Rule #4B – Get to know club and bar owners, and make friends with bartenders.  A way to a bar tenders heart is tipping. In future articles, I will explain the concept of pre-tipping, you will love this one.

Rule #5 – Learn to love the bottom shelf at the liquor store.  You can buy a handle of Vladimir Vodka for your pre-game for around $11.

Sidenote: This may be a rumor but I heard if you run bottom shelf liquor through a Brita filter two or three times, you can make homemade Grey Goose.  Just sayin’…

More rules to come…

This year I decided to report on 3 major St. Paddy’s day events: McPattysfest at McFadden’s, the night of St. Patrick’s Day (3/17) and the Erin Express in Hoboken, NJ.

Hoboken, NJ

Weekend of 3/6/2010

Hoboken, NJ is right across the river from NYC, and has been know for public drunkenness and other “lewd acts”. A group of friends and I spent most of the day at the Irish Bar McSwiggan’s. It was an average size bar that had DJ and a decent crowd. We met people from all over including Boston, NYC and from as far as Alabama and Omaha. The police were on a mission this year and 555 summonses were issued. A friend of mine received a ticket for “jay walking” (he was only one of 85 people who received this type of ticket).

The Good:
Hoboken seems to draw people from all over. The people were friendly and everyone was out to have a good time.

The Bad:
Most bars in Hoboken charge a $40+ cover charge and there are no drink specials. My buddy recommended everyone should pre-game before entering a bar so you can tolerate the environment, the $6 beers and $10+ Irish car bombs. Bars are small and only let one person in at a time (after someone from inside the bar left). Lastly, the police were a bit aggressive: Jay walking? come on…

Weekend Before St. Paddy’s Day – Philadelphia, PA

Weekend of 3/13/2010

The 4th Annual McPaddysfest at McFadden’s on 3rd Street included live performances by Lost In Paris and Mr. Greengenes. The bands rocked out and had the crowd going all night while the reasonable drink prices made it affordable for patrons to drink all day long. There may have been hurricane like conditions outside but under the big tent (that covered the entire parking lot) was an all night celebration. $10 tickets (pre-sale) felt like a steal after the previous weekend’s $40 cover charge in Hoboken.

The Good:
The live bands, drink specials and a good crowd for an all day drinking event.

The Bad:
The short wait outside in the rain to get into the bar and the coat check mix up at the end of the night.

Actual St. Paddy’s Day Philadelphia, PA

Wednesday 3/17/2010

People were drinking all day on St. Paddy’s Day. We met up with some friends after work and visited a few small local bars down town then went to The Irish Pub which was somewhat crowded but not too crazy. We we then decided to go back to McFadden’s to meet up with some friends. McFadden’s specials that night included $5 Irish car bombs, $4 Guiness, $3 Coors Lights, (much better than Hoboken prices).

The Good:
Cheap drink specials and the fact everyone seemed to be having a great time on a Wednesday night.

The Bad:
$5 car bombs sound like a good idea, but I saw a few people that went a little overboard.

The Results

Philly is obviously the clear winner.

If you dropped in to visit us before the launch, you got a peak at our promo video. Shout out to our cameraman and film editor, the multitalented, Christian Crosby. (Isn’t it amazing how it can take two days to tape and hours to edit a piece that requires only one minute and seventeen seconds to view? Ah! The joys of video…)

The shooting started early at Strongbox with a cameo by our first “In Focus” All-Stars, the Cool Kids. Then we strolled over to Denim for the filming of the “better half” of the PhillyIn Cast, yours truly and the fabulous Miss Amber-Joi. Then, as fate would have it, we were off to our first major roadblock of the day. Our next location turned out to be a no-go, for reasons beyond everybody’s control. Ok, what next?

Amber-Joi, Christian and I wandered the streets like aimless orphans, cold and hungry, trying desperately to construct a new game plan. Where is that fairy godmother? She’s never around when you need her! Our brains followed our bodies into numbness on one of the coldest days of this frigid winter. Freezing our bootys off, lugging huge bags of wardrobe and equipment around the streets of Philadelphia, we could barely think. (Oh, the sacrifices we make for our readers…by the way, did I mention that the “lesser half” of the PhillyIn Cast, ie. the boys, were still cozy and warm, swilling coffee, and wrapped around their computers. ) What had we gotten ourselves into!

Whoop! Here comes our fairy godmother now! Dear, sweet, lovable, WARM, and understanding Public House came to our rescue taking pity on the plight of two of their favorite damsels! Of course, now that the coast was clear, the boys showed up. How like the boys to arrive just in time for a hardy meal at Public House, and some dandy conversation. Christian wins the award for “Best Food Order on a Film Set” AND extra points for letting everyone have a taste (sharing is caring my friends). He got the Cookie Dough Smash! O.M.G.! This half-baked ooey-gooey cookie dough, with ultra creamy vanilla ice cream, topped with decadent hot fudge sauce was like a dream I once had (I’m a self-proclaimed cookie monster). As Rachael Ray would say, YUM-O! Now, back to work, or in Justin and Chris’s case, TO work.

I hear Christian shout, “Take 18. Annnnnd Action.”

“Did the girls have this much trouble?” Justin asked as he and Chris stumbled over their lines again, laughing hysterically at every attempt.  ”Not at all. You guys just suck.” Christian laughed back at him from behind the camera. Somehow they made it through their lines, and we made it to the end of day 1 of shooting.

Next day, a Tuesday, we’re back to Strongbox to get live footage. Now THIS was a total blast! No fairy godmother required!
