“3 … 2 …1”! The crowd counted down the last seconds of a W it could hardly believe. The Philadelphia Flyers are on their way to Chicago and their first appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals since 1997. After an unlikely entrance into the playoffs, and a miraculous comeback in Round 2, incredulous fans watched the Flyers skate smoothly through Round 3.  [Pinch me – I want to know I’m awake!]  By the “1” count, we were all true believers.  “The Broad Street Bullies” Were Back!  Hallelujah!

What a night for the Flyers! They proved their worth to a packed house with play after amazing play. It had all the improbable elements of a Hollywood sports flick, except it was real! A new coach sets a championship tone, a replacement goalie plays far beyond everyone’s expectations, an injured Jeff Carter scores a powerful goal just back from surgery off a newly mended foot, and the captain, Mike Richards, performs magic twice, while facedown on the ice. (Pity the fool who ends up playing Richie in the movie version.)

What a night for Kate! Running around with my first press pass, a kid in a candy shop. Who can I annoy first? Who can I annoy most? Media personalities? Flyers employees? The players? How about, all of the above? (Ok, I really tried not to annoy the players. This was their night, so I gave them a pass, said my congratulations to the few I knew, and sent them on their merry “winning” way.)

“Oh! Oh! There’s Marshall Harris!”

“Well, well, well, look who’s got her very own press pass! You think you’re big time now?” he laughs. Ha…ha…Marshall thinks he’s funny.

“Oh! Oh! There’s Marc Farzetta!” Since I’d been on –air in the Tastykake studios that very morning, Marc and the WIP crew got a double dose of Kate that day! Thanks for letting me visit the suite guys!

And in a suite not so far far away, more friends! Matt Cord and Marisa Magnatta of WMMR.

I notice several of my favorite Wachovia Center guards do a double take when they see me coming. Oh that’s right! I’m not wearing my usual Sixers crop top and white go-go boots. And, there’s ice where the court should be!

I realize I’ve grown accustomed to running the Wachovia Center as if it were my personal playground. (Can you call racing from stands, to locker room, to suites, to concourse, and back to the court before the next timeout playing?) It’s easy for me to forget that when the Sixers aren’t playing, my dressing room is being used by OTHER people! Oops!

Suddenly, amidst the celebrations and high fives, I hear cries rising up from the crowd. “Don’t touch it! Don’t do it Richie!” He’s about to accept the Prince of Wales Trophy. That’s just superstition right? Well, it is now! He’s not only touched it, he hoisted it up and led the charge straight into the Flyers locker room. Give them that, the Flyers are fearless.

They believed in themselves when no one else did. They’ve been through the crucible of a tumultuous season, losing streaks, bad press, a controversial coach change, and a scandal in the locker room. And here we stand, Conference Champions.

During their odyssey from heart-wrenching “try-hards” to heart-thumping “ice warriors,” this team has raised up an impressive legion of new hockey fans. Now, I know that in this town there has been a certain stigma attached to what some would call “bandwagon” fans. GET OVER IT! There’s electricity in the air. There’s an entire city massing behind a team that’s earned its stripes the hard way.  That’s not “bandwagon,” that’s respect.  “R-E-S-P-E-C-T !!!”  The Aretha Franklin and Kate Smith kind. Get your Jerseys before they run out of Orange.  And, you veterans out there – find a newbie, give him/her a hug, and welcome ‘em aboard.  It’s going to be a hell of a ride.

In my humble opinion, cheese steak will always prevail over deep dish pizza. Take that Chicago!

Last week, I told you about the Anderson Monarchs Girls Soccer Club, their upcoming documentary and a charity event being held in their honor. See link below for the original article.

You’re Invited: Anderson Monarchs Event

Were you able to attend? I was! Signacurl Hair Salon was transformed into a cocktail lounge for the event.  I especially enjoyed a special champagne/Crown Royale cocktail (Cheating on my diet, don’t tell my trainer!) and delicious hors d’oeuvres courtesy of Lacroix. Some items were up for silent auction, unfortunately I didn’t win. I did receive a comped haircut in my gift bag though, and had a lovely conversation with the owner, Joseph Lentini who has been in the business since 1972!

The producer of The Anderson Monarchs Documentary, Daniel M. Kalai, seized the opportunity to raise his concerns of the overused soccer field directly to The Mayor who promised he’d be looking into it.

Here are some photos!

Dear AJ, My boyfriend watches sports all of the time, he’s obsessed! It’s so boring for me. I can’t stand it. I feel he loves sports more than he loves me. What should I do???

Hi! Thank you so much for your question. This is a great one…

First of all, you should probably be grateful that it’s sports that your boyfriend is obsessed with, as opposed to less tolerable things, like other women, porn and other unbearable habits. We all have our vices, and in my opinion you should really be thankful that you’re dealing with something  so trivial. If this is your biggest problem with your boyfriend… you don’t have much of a problem at all.

There are a few things that I suggest…

First, I suggest you give sports a chance! They really aren’t so bad. My college boyfriend was obsessed with football. In the beginning, I too thought it was pretty obnoxious. I mean, I would sit through an entire game with him, and he would have the nerve to watch highlights after the fact!!! Then, he would want to watch the same highlights on Sports Center throughout the week. He even had the audacity to play MADDEN during halftime!!! I didn’t get it. Why did we have to watch the same stuff over and over again!?! Pretty obnoxious. To top it off, it wasn’t just NFL; he had to watch college football too… And the draft. And when March Madness came (yes I know March Madness is Basketball)…just forget it. We were glued to the TV set. This lead to approximately 365 of sport spectating.

I quickly came to the conclusion that he just loved sports and if I was going to make this thing work I was going to have to start loving sports too.  Before I knew it, “Voila” I started to like the stuff to. When you consume so much one thing, you start to learn and appreciate what’s going on. When you become familiar with the teams and players, you start to like the good ones and eventually, you may start loving the stuff too! (I can’t wait for Football season to start!) If you care about your boyfriend, you should at least attempt to care about the things that mean the most to him…because you would expect him to do the same for you.

Now, let’s jump back for a minute to the “365 of sports”, because it brings me to my next point. My dear, you shouldn’t be spending 365 days with ANYONE!! If you hate what he’s doing so much, maybe you should pick up your own hobby and give him some space to do him. TRUST ME, I know it’s hard, but I promise you this is for the best. Why?

1. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

2. You can find something enjoyable to do with your time!

3. He doesn’t have to sit there and listen to moan while he enjoys his sports.

Lastly, if you’re in a serious relationship and your man truly loves you he should be willing to compromise.  There’s nothing wrong with his love for sports, but if it really bothers you he should have some understanding. For instance, if you sit through an entire game, it’s not unreasonable to ask him to turn off the highlights and devote 100% of his attention to you for a while. You deserve it!!! And don’t you let him forget it.

World Cup soccer could be heading to Philadelphia 2018/2022.  Philly needs your help to bring it home.  I would not be posting this if it was a lost cause, but cities around the world are petitioning for the World Cup to be held in their city.  Apparently we are sitting at number two for total votes in the world, so go to www.gousabid.com/city/local/philadelphia-pa/ or sign the petition below, to help bring the biggest sporting event right here to our home town.

Spread the word!

“Not all goals have nets.”

For some people, sports are “just for fun”. They are a weekend activity, fun family bonding time, or simply good exercise. For others, it can be an escape. An escape from bullying, from family problems, or from the rigours of everyday life. For a young child, it can open doors to places they never knew excited. That’s where the Anderson Monarchs Girls Soccer Club comes in.

The mission of the Anderson Monarchs Girls Soccer Club (based at Smith Playground in Philadelphia) is to provide high level soccer training and competition and academic support to inner city Philadelphia girls, but it’s become so much more than that. They give the girls skills, community, support, and hope.

They participants have achieved success on the field, in the classroom, and recently also in the press. (See the movie trailer above.) Word of mouth and the positive press has resulted in a steady growth in their program to the point that they CANNOT continue without more public support!!! They have never turned away a girl who could not afford their modest costs.

So in honor of the Anderson Monarchs Organization, you are invited to a beautiful evening at Signacurl by Joseph Lentini starting at 6pm in Rittenhouse. Cocktails will be provided by Race Street Cafe and Hors D’oeuvres from Lacroix Restaurant.

Any charitable donations to the Anderson Monarchs would help them monumentally. They operate under non-profit umbrella Soccer Sisters United, Inc. They will also be having couple items for a silent auction to help.

WHAT: Event honoring the Anderson Monarch Girls Soccer Club

WHERE: Signacurl by Joseph Lentini, in Rittenhouse, 116 South 19th Street

WHEN: Thursday, May 20th at 6 pm

ADMISSION IS FREE

Take Me Out to the Ballgame

posted by kate

posted by Kate // 5.17.10

Ahhh!  Spring!  Flowers, sunshine, birds chirping (and invading my house – a story for another day).  But, more important than any of that – hot dogs and baseball – or more to the point, the “Fightin Phils” taking the field again.

The first Phillies game I can remember attending was at the Vet.  My sister and I had gotten free tickets out of a package of Ballpark Franks.  What a place. What an experience.  What a game.  (Even if we were further from the field than the Goodyear Blimp.)

That day, Shelley insisted we leave early so as not to have to “fight the traffic.”  Now, I know, this is a time honored tradition here in Philadelphia.  But, it’s one that I think is pretty stupid.  (Just so you know – Very Uncool!)  I remember looking back over my shoulder, the lights of Verteran Stadium burning brightly enough to give you a good tan, and hearing the crowd go wild.  “Ooohhhh!  What just happened?  Something just happened?”  I turned in my tracks and wanted to run back in.  Shelley only managed to head me off by promising to put the game on the radio during the ride home.

Baseball Obsession!  Mine started sometime shortly after watching “A League of Their Own.”  (Just for the record, coach; it’s the reason I refused to play softball in school.  Why couldn’t the girls play hardball?  It was hardly fair.)  I had to content myself playing catch with the brick wall on the side of the house, and playing ball with the neighborhood boys down the street.  That was when I was forged as a Phillies fan, under the influence of my grandfather who was tried and true.  He bled Phillies Red and collected big “P” memorabilia.

One day, especially, lives on in my “baseball memory” of childhood.  I talked my best friend, Rebecca, into throwing a ball around, but couldn’t find any of my brothers’.  “Wait!  I know where one is!”  I scrambled up the stairs to Dad’s office and found a ball with some “scribble” across it.  (We had a bunch of these in the house.  I was too young to know WHY.)  I couldn’t exactly read it, but was pretty sure it said “Mickey Mouse.”  I remember wondering why anyone would write that on a ball, but figured one of my brothers had done it.  So, I snatched it, and off we went to play . . . in the rain.  That night, my father sat me down.  He spoke calmly, but I could tell he was upset with me.  “OK, I’m not going to yell, but . . .”;  to his credit, he didn’t yell.  He just looked ruefully at the beat up, bedraggled ball, and explained who Mickey Mantle was.  Apparently, he had “The Oklahoma Kid” sign it for his father during a business meeting years before.  It was just one of several “inspired” mistakes of my childhood.  Call it my “Sandlot” moment.  “Sorry dad!  I love you!”

After the Phillies won the National League Championship, then broke my heart (I forgive you, “Wild Thing”), I remained true, wearing my Phillies hat everywhere – even, occasionally, to bed.  (Mom swore to me, that I would go bald wearing that hat. – I thought of it as “taking one for the team.”)  Lenny Dykstra, Darren Daulten, Curt Shilling, Mitch Williams!  I can just hear Harry K announcing their names.  Those were my boys!

Happily, for me, and for all of Philadelphia, the Phillies have again risen to the top of the game.  I was sad to see the Vet go; but, Citizens Bank Park is a wonderful place to watch a game.  In addition, it’s home to one of my other favorite places.  McFaddens Ball Park.  It’s a great place for the “ticketless” to watch a game.  (And even when I have a ticket, you can often spot me there before or after a game.)  What a place to be when the Phillies won the World Series!  (Say, I’ve got a great idea – let’s do THAT again!)

By the playoffs last year, I was so caught up in Phillies fever, I was accused of making Citizens Bank a part-time job!

Anyway, it’s great to see the Phils back in town.  I can’t wait to get to a game.  If anyone has an extra ticket, feel free to let me know :)  I like my hot dog with extra ketchup!

The Phillies will be home all this week: May 17th to 23rd. For tickets, check out the Phillies website:

“History will be made.”

I don’t know what NHL marketing guru dreamed up this year’s playoff slogan, but I would be willing to bet they didn’t anticipate the Flyers potential to justify it. Tonight, the Broad Street Bullies – 2.0, will attempt to accomplish what only two teams before them have.

After barely squeezing into the playoffs with an overtime shoot out, many had written the 09-10 Flyers off. “They need to make major roster changes!”, “They have no consistent goalie!”, “They party too much!”, came the cries from the “peanut gallery.” After their big Round 1 win, people seemed much happier, and content. Ok, it was nice that they had made a run, and proved they weren’t the lazy, inconsistent team that the “talking heads” had accused them of being near the end of the season…But no one was convinced that they would have what it takes to keep going. And after the first three games in Round 2, let’s face it, even the Flyer’s staff had probably started planning their summer vacations.

But now, like the ’42 Toronto Maple Leafs, and the ’75 New York Islanders, they will be fighting for their lives, and a spot in the history books.

Momentum. In sports, it can mean a lot. In the playoffs, it can mean everything. Game 7. Go ahead, call them underdogs, you’ll only fuel their fire.

Will “History Be Made” tonight? We can only wait and see.

Best of Luck to the Philadelphia Flyers on behalf of the entire PhillyIn team!

PHL: Not Up to Par!

posted by amber

posted by Amber-Joi // 5.12.10

Is it just me? Or is the Philadelphia International Airport  just not up to par? I recently took a little trip to Houston. It was fabulous!!! But I’m not here to discuss that. I want to address PHL International!

Now, it is certainly not the worst airport I’ve visited; but, it is definitely in need of some serious improvement. PHL officials, if you are out there, please listen. I have some recommendations.  Let me help.

First, I was looking to charge my iPhone before my 3 hour flight to Houston. I couldn’t find a free outlet anywhere! I was ducking and weaving between people and chairs!! And then finally, jackpot!! I found one! But…

Exhibit A

In this day and age, it’s imperative to airports to provide an ample amount of chargers for the plethora of devices that travelers carry for work and entertainment. (Particularly, because many airlines have eliminated entertainment.)  No one should have to fight  to charge their phone. And more importantly, outlets like these should not exist ANYWHERE! It’s just not safe.

Next, these nifty electronic exit doors are new! I must admit that they look pretty high tech and cool. However…

Exhibit B

What purpose do they serve? Seriously, they are EXIT doors. Why are they so complicated? They may look simple, but they are not. They have a tendency to freeze for obnoxious amounts of time based on the flow of the traffic. I know I’m not the only one who has experienced this. I’ve gotten stuck in front of these glass doors numerous times.

Next…

Yesssss!!!  PHL has stepped into the 21st century by providing wireless internet access around the airport. But…

Exhibit C

Have you ever attempted to connect??? It doesn’t work!!! You can’t access the internet. (At least, not from the 3 locations that I tried.) Now that is preposterous. If I can get wireless access on a $12/ticket bolt bus ride, you would think I could get the same at the airport, where fares have skyrocketed!

There are many other ways that PHL could be improved. And I could complain about them. But guess what folks!?! That’s not my style. So I’m going to tell you some things about the Philly airport that I absolutely love. Those things include …

Chickies & Pete’s: for a relaxing drink before a long plain ride, their famous clam chowder, and when I’m feeling greedy a Chicken Cheesesteak… mmmm.

Friendly Staff:  I have been very lucky at PHL and I always seem to run into the nicest most helpful airport employees. When I’m late, they do their best to help. When I have a question, they typically have a solid answer (with a smile) and so on.

And last but not least I LOVE the…

Flights!!! Lol. Even when I am delayed (which is all too often) PHL gets me OUT OF PHILLY, when I’m in need of a break. I am forever grateful for that.

As I mentioned, my most recent trip was to Houston. I went to go see the lady below, my bff since 3rd grade, LAUREN. We were celebrating her Graduation/ Birthday/ Future Mother’s Day. Houston is just splendid!

But I digress… back to the real topic at hand which is PHL! I want to hear from readers. What do you think about Philadelphia International Airport? Leave your comments here; and, please keep them clean ;-)

This past weekend, I had the honor of attending a great charity event at the Waterworks Lounge.  The event was for the Philadelphia Academies, which is run by our own Lisa Nutter, Mayor Michael Nutter’s wife.

Philadelphia Academies, Inc. is a non-profit organization that expands life and economic options for Philadelphia public school students through career-focused programming that prepares them for employment and post-secondary education. They connect positive adults to future goals of young people.

I had the pleasure of meeting some very inspirational people at the party, including fashion designer Nicole Miller, ?uestlove, Tony Danza, some big names in Philly’s business sector, and Mr. Philadelphia himself, Mayor Michael Nutter.  The event held a silent auction along with a live auction, which made a big chunk of change for the Academies. I was truly inspired by the perseverance and dedication of some of the kids that I talked to.  The drive that these kids had was beyond amazing. There were two awards given away that evening, which are the following:

Pay It Forward – Rubby Canela, a 2007 graduate of the Urban Education Academy at Parkway West High School, is this year’s Pay It Forward Awardee. This scholarship highlights an outstanding Philadelphia Academies, Inc. graduate who has overcome significant challenges to continue his/her education and pursue career goals

Stand and Deliver Award – Stradley, Ronon, Stevens & Young has been a corporate partner of the Philadelphia Academies for many years and is fully committed to the mission of providing classes, programs and work experiences for high school students in the Philadelphia public school system. William R. Sasso, Chairman, will represent the company as the Academies’ 2010 honoree.

Hearing Rubby’s story inspired me to work even harder, and listening to the obstacles he’s overcome, gave me the courage to keep pursuing my own passions.  I am thankful I had the opportunity to attend, and it was a true blessing hearing the passion of these youngsters from Philly.  I also had the opportunity to design the invitation and the signage for the event. (see photo below)

The after party soon followed, and these intelligent, hardworking citizens of Philadelphia cut loose. I just want to say, they still know how to party!  After a serious discussion with the Mayor about the sugar tax, and who from my agency he would take to a desert island, he pardoned himself and proceeded to the stage where he rapped every lyric to Sugar Hill Gangs, Rapper’s Delight; not making that up at all.

The funniest part of this event didn’t actually occur on the night of the event, but rather the following week.  My boss came in one morning and said, “You won’t believe the story I am about to tell you”. Apparently, Lisa Nutter recognized him from the event, and approached him at Marathon Grill.  She said, “Your boys (myself and my co-worker) were a great time, they closed out the bar.”  Michael (Mayor Nutter) even said your one guy (me) introduced you (my boss) to him (Mayor Nutter) saying, hey Mike meet my boss.”  They actually got a kick out of me calling him Mike, which was very cool on their part.  He will definitely get my vote on his upcoming term.
