A Little Bit About PYT //

So we finally reached Northern Liberties hamburger Mecca (although I’m told the Standard Tap burger is nothing to scuff at). Which begs the question, how did a self-described “California style burger bar” get so popular in Philly? Well, PYT is as much about being "seen-on-the-scene" as it is about the burgers, (just like it’s almost as much about the bar as it is about the food) especially in the summertime when the Piazza is all a buzz. The place has a light and bright feel to it. The photos of young hipsters devouring their messy juicy burgers are quite suggestive and maybe a little over the top, but the whole feel of PYT is sort of campy (adult milkshakes anyone?). So you gotta have a “if you can’t beat it, join ‘em” attitude to really enjoy your visit. As for the name? Tommy Up says, "The drinks are pretty, the music is young and the food is the thing."

I got the TLC burger, without bacon, (perhaps I should have tasted it with, for authenticity, but I have a habit of ordering without) but I loooooved this burger! The chicken was really juicy and my favorite part of it was the “special sauce” on top, not quite sure what it was…except delicious! I was also digging the potato roll. The onion rings were not “the best” that I’ve ever had (to their credit, they did said “probably,” not “the best”), but were still decent nonetheless. As the sweet tooth reporter, I should have ordered one of the adult milkshakes, just to let you in on it, but I’m going to be honest, I was full, another time…

All in all, I’d love to order another TLC burger (although next time I might try the namesake, PYT because I’ve heard good things). My only major complaint was that $8 for a burger is pretty outrageous. If it came with fries, or onion rings, or basically anything other than chips “straight-out-the-bag” I might be able to justify it. PYT would be great if they had their own signature “side” to their burgers (bay fries, sweet potato fries, potato salad or maybe “kettle-cooked” chips the homemade way, something creative).

I’m sure this will be repeated, since we came to a decision that the onion rings are the best onion rings ever, but the onion rings ARE “The Best Onion Rings Ever”.  Also, the service is always friendly and on point.  They also serve a unique item on the menu called the “Ten Dollar Milkshake” which simply combines my two favorite items, ice cream and alcohol.  Worth every cent of that pricey sales tag.

I went with the vegetarian option, the “Calibunga Burger” with Seared White Bean Garlic & Breadcrumb patty and Basil, Tomato and Avocado on a Martin’s Potato Roll. I have to give kudos to PYT for even offering a vegetarian burger, in this day and age one would think it would be standard, but it’s not … so thanks PYT! The “Calibunga Burger” was solid. The taste was really good, but I didn’t particularly like the consistency of the patty, too soft. Great idea, good execution. Next time I would go with a chicken burger, they looked really juicy, mmm. I went with a side of “Probably The Best Onion Rings You’ve Ever Had”, and they weren’t the best, but they were  pretty darn good!

My buddies live right above PYT so I have been there several times. The burgers are good, the Royal with Cheese is one of my favorites. They must have a small kitchen at PTY because the food is never quick, but the burgers are good. The onion rings are huge. They have TV’s over the bar so you can watch a Flyers game or whatever is on with a friend or two. It can get crowded at times and the place isn’t huge, but a nice place to hang out if you are in the area.
