Part diner, part club, this venue is a staple in Northern Liberties. The meatloaf here has won "Best of Philly" and the restaurant has been featured on the Food Networks, "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives." The most popular nights for Silk City are Thursdays and Saturdays.

I have this theory, that there is a perfect time to show up at club. If you get there to early, it looks lame, and if you get there too late, it’s too crowded and people are already getting a little too tipsy and likely spill their drink on you. We were so busy having a ball at North Bowl, that we ended up in the latter situation. I still don’t quite get the whole diner/club thing, but it was super crowded so people must love it! We bumped into some friends and quickly joined the dance party. I liked the music and the “superhero” decor (another thing I’m not sure I understand, but I like). It was too chilly to try the outside, but once the weather is warm I’d like to give it a shot!

What a mess, way too crowded.  Very nostalgic of my fraternity days with the hip-hop music, huge sweaty mob of intoxicated party-goers, and long lines to get a drink; but without the perks of knowing everyone at the party to make me feel comfortable about the situation. Just not my scene, but hey, that is what some people like.

I was shocked and impressed. The whole diner concept was “super cool” to me. I think it’s pretty dope that if you show up early enough, you can enjoy some diner food before you party in the same building. I give Silk City a 5 star rating (on a thursday night) for that pure fact alone! I guess if you bring food into the picture, I am easily pleased. But aside from the diner gimmick, there were definitely two other reasons that really won me over at Silk City.

The first thing - the crowd. Even though at first the crowd is a little intimidating, one song in and the next thing you know, you are one of them. From b-boy’s to hipsters, everyone at Silk City is simply, friendly and just wants to have a good time. The second highly impressive thing about Silk is – the music. All I can say is “wow”. Like, wow! I don’t know who they hire as their DJ, but any DJ who plays “Say Yeah” by Wiz Khalifa in the club is a friend of mine.  Everytime I go, the DJ manages to cover all the hits.. AND MORE. If you do not enjoy Hip-Hop music then let me tell you: Silk City is not the place for you. The atmosphere is extremely urban, but still remains to be classy. White, black, asian, whatever! The crowd is diverse and overall Silk City is a easy place to enjoy yourself. Bring a towel though, it gets messy!

This place is a cool unique place that is a landmark in No-Libs but it is not exactly my scene. I have been to Silk City a few times and it seems its either empty or extremely crowded and I never stay long (although it could just be the times I go). The outside bar is coo,l but the layout of the inside is a bit odd and conducive to people standing in the way making it difficult to get anywhere. I have heard other people say they love it there, so maybe I need to give it another shot.
