A Little Bit About Brown Betty Dessert Boutique //

Brown Betty’s is another “sweet” mother/daughter operation on Liberties Walk (The Little Candy Shoppe being the other), but this one’s inspiration actually comes from the grandmother, Elizabeth Ruth Hinton, affectionately known as Betty. She was known for her “high, moist pound cakes” and luckily for us, the recipes got passed down to the next generation, her daughter, Linda. Also fortunate, is that her granddaughter, Norrinda, convinced her mom to “let them eat sweets,” and open an upscale bakery for the people of Philadelphia more focused on taste then just design. All the cakes in this boutique are named after dynamic woman in their family, providing cute to sassy titles for the desserts. The women's photos are displayed in the store, where you can get desserts to go or place special orders.

I am now obsessed with Brown Betty’s! I’m not a huge fan of cupcakes. But these cupcakes are anything but ordinary! They had generous samples to try, so I tasted a “Hattie Don’t Play + Coconut” and “Sallie’s Sour cream” along with my goodies-to-go. I don’t even like coconut, but the decadent chocolate and luscious icing tasted so good, it didn’t matter. I bought the most popular cupcake,  “Jean’s Road Trip” and then also the namesake, “Brown Betty” dessert.  “Jean’s Road Trip” is a red velvet cake dream topped with cream cheese frosting. Brown Betty’s cupcakes are so dense and moist; they are unlike any other cupcake I’ve ever tried. The Brown Betty is a mix of fresh apples, raisins and spices on a bread crumb crust and topped with oats and rum sauce.  I enjoyed the Brown Betty, but I wasn’t as impressed with it as I was with the cupcakes. That may be because I love apple pie, and don’t usually care for cupcakes, but nonetheless I was wishing the Brown Betty had a heavier crust. Anyway the cakes were delicious, and I highly recommended this bakery. Next time I go back, I’m buying a dozen!

Update: I returned to Brown Bettie to get a cake for my mom’s birthday. I picked up a chocolate cupcake for the road, and it seemed so-so. Oh no! Had my cupcake dream been a mirage? It was almost Valentine’s Day and instead of the regular icing, the cupcake had a glaze. I nervously anticipated opening the huge cake. I hadn’t pre-ordered but they happened to have a pink pound cake standing by and offered to put my mom’s name on it, which was lovely. First bite….divine! I wasn’t wrong afterall! Best pound cake I ever had. Way to go B.B.

The desserts are food for the soul. They actually let you taste the desserts before you buy! Their very courteous staff only compliments the delicious desserts.

I adore the Brown Betty concept. The decor is just delightful and the family inspired recipes are so special. I admire how Norrinda and her mother (co-owners) incorporate their family legacy into a DELICIOUS business model. I sampled  the Lemon Pound, Carrot and Chocolate cupcakes. They were scrumptious!!!

If you have a craving for sweet, rich desserts this is the place to come. Right when you walk in the door the smell of delicious baked goods hits you like you just got sacked by Trent Cole. I tried one of the samples and almost had to sit down because it was so rich. I am not a huge fan of sweets, but if you are, you need check this place out.
